Did CD packaging affect how we treat music in the 21st century?

So, I've been wondering lately if the fact that CDs come in interchangeable plastic cases has led to people becoming detached from musical product.

Think about it. If your CD case cracks, you buy another one. You can buy them cheap at almost any big box retailer.
On the other hand, if your vinyl album cover splits, you repair it. It's something nice to look at that also protects the music that you love. Or, if you're an obsessive (like me) you track down a new copy.

20th century music fans were very attached to the album cover as a work of art, to be worshiped, parsed and divined.
Now, the name of every classic album glides by with the flick of a thumb and all music graphics have been reduced to indistinguishable glowing pixels.

Did CD packaging lead to this sense of consumer remove?

Any thoughts?
